A recent In Touch article alleges that former Teen Mom 2 star Kailyn Lowry filed a protection from abuse order (PFA) against ex-boyfriend Chris Lopez. Lowry, who has a child with Lopez and was pregnant at the time of the incident, claimed that Lopez continued to contact her despite the PFA and eventually assaulted her.
In addition to over 60 calls made through a blocked phone number, Lopez showed up at Lowry's home, grabbed her by the neck, and attempted to punch her stomach. It was only after a friend entered Lowry's house that Lopez stopped and fled the scene. Lowry filed a police report after the incident, and Lopez turned himself in for violating his PFA.
Lopez faced multiple charges in addition to violating his PFA. Although he did receive a two-year prison sentence, the judge suspended it later on. As part of his probation, Lopez took domestic violence classes, received mental health treatment, and had to cease contact with Lowry even after the PFA expires.
Celebrities Not Immune
Celebrities are no strangers to legal woes, and some have multiple run-ins with law enforcement. Yet whether it's custody battles, DUI's, or assault, they remain accountable for actions and must follow the court's orders. Violating a judge's ruling can lead to additional legal complications, including fines and imprisonment.
Any person can file a PFA in Pennsylvania to receive protection from abuse. Multiple kinds of PFA's exist, depending on case details. For severe cases where a court is not immediately available, a victim receives an emergency order until they can file an ex parte temporary order.
Since Lopez has multiple charges, he received an initial sentence of two years. Usually, a PFA violation in PA infers indirect criminal contempt of the court and can lead to:
- Up to 6 months in jail
- Fines between $300 – $1,000
- Criminal conviction
Although celebrities are in the public eye and their case details are subject to scrutiny by the public, the legal process is the same for all citizens. If a person has multiple charges or existing court orders, violating a PFAÂ exacerbates their case. For example, it can lead to changes in a custody agreement.
Without the representation of a skilled attorney, it can be challenging to defend against charges even if the filer decides to drop the PFA. Without a judge's annulment, a PFA stays in place until it expires.
