There's regular hangry, and then there's the kind of hangry that leads to legal trouble.
One woman who couldn’t keep her hangry in check could face charges after her outburst at a Red Lobster in Springettsbury Township was captured on video and shared on social media.
The woman had placed an order to pick up on Mother's Day but when she went to get the food, the restaurant was so overwhelmed with orders that her order took longer than she expected and she demanded a refund.
In the video that was widely viewed online, the woman then demanded to go inside the restaurant to get a refund, even though dine-in services were closed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
A female employee of Red Lobster pushed the woman, who was not wearing a mask, outside and told her to get out.
“I am going in and I am getting my refund,” the woman can be heard yelling as three employees blocked the door to the restaurant.
The woman then punched the female Red Lobster employee. Four other Red Lobster employees then went outside to separate the customer from the employee she hit. At one point, one of the employees was holding on to the customer's ponytail, causing the woman to become even more irate.
“I was assaulted and have a whole crowd to see it,” she can be heard saying.
Approximately 100 other customers were waiting in line to pick up orders and witnessed the altercation.
Red Lobster's corporate headquarters released a statement apologizing for the long wait but also making clear that the woman was in the wrong to assault the restaurant employee.
“We understand that we may have disappointed some of our guests on Mother's Day when, due to COVID-19 and changes to our operations and staffing, we were not able to keep up with the demand at some of our locations,” the statement read. “We apologize that some of our guests experienced long wait times, crowds, and in some cases, did not receive their orders."
“That said, we do not tolerate violence for any reason in our restaurants. We expect our team members to treat our guests with respect, and we expect our guests to treat our team members with respect in return. We are grateful our Manager and the guest involved were not seriously injured in the incident on Sunday.”
Springettsbury Township Police Lt. Tony Beam said the woman could face charges as a result of her actions.
In an age of ubiquitous camera phones and social media, hangry or not, losing control of your temper can result in a lot more than a missed meal.
Law enforcement officers routinely use information people post about themselves as well as videos and other information that others post to incriminate suspects. People should assume that anything they do in public can be filmed and used against them, as well as anything they voluntarily post on social media. It doesn't matter if your social media posts are set to “private” settings or even if unwise posts or accounts have been deleted. Any information that has ever been shared online can be used by law enforcement officers.
The lady with the red-hot temper at Red Lobster, once she's identified, could be facing charges—and that's certainly not the Mother's Day present she hoped to receive.
